Maybe the seed grew too slowly, maybe the soil could not support it. He pulls out the stem, roots and all. It is suddenly tenacious, but the dry earth cracks, gives its child, knowing it cannot remain there, dwarfed by all the landed gentry, oaks and maples, rising pines and dogwood serfs. They do not know of this small one growing, dying.
He looks for a better clearing for the young, green, decaying tree.

The real him was shut in, locked away long ago. This smiling, laughing face is not his. This warm, friendly voice is not his own.
It's in the way he sometimes stops, gazes into nothing with drooped shoulders, and almost stops breathing that shows how broken he is.
